The photo shows some dirt, a bit of surface wear, & a few tiny pinhead size surface indentations. Two of the children moved their heads when the photo was taken & so their heads are not in focus. The front of the mount has scuffs & heavily worn corners & two tiny pinholes at the top (probably from being pinned up on the wall). The back of the mount shows heavy residue from being, at one time, mounted in an album. Also, the back of the mount has heavy stains & browning.

    Description

Circa 1896-1912 or so political campaign photo. Extremely rare cabinet photo shows a black family sitting in their parlor with a Republican political campaign banner. The banner, which is hanging on the wall shown on the right side of photo, has the wording "Colored Republican Club Of Carlisle". The banner was probably made of silk with hand painted lettering. The banner had at least one other word before the word "Colored". But, the lettering in the photo on the banner before the word "Colored" only shows a tiny bit of the bottom of one letter. So, we do not have any idea what the missing word or words were before the word "Colored" that are no longer in the photo.
Also, the word "Colored" is partly chipped away from the photo & the lettering "Col" with a tiny part of the bottom of the second "o" in the word "Colored" is present.
There may possibly be an additional word under the word "Carlisle" at the bottom of the banner but we are not certain. IF there is another word in that position under the word "Carlisle" the logical assumption is that the word would be Pennsylvania. This important photo which shows a black family with their "Colored Republican Club Of Carlisle" banner was discovered many years ago in Carlisle, Pa. It is highly unlikely that another example of this historically significant American black heritage related photo exists &/or will ever be found!! The mount measures 6 5/16 inches by 5 1/2 inches. The photo measures 4 15/32 inches by 3 3/4 inches.
