    Description

The last of the route awards in the controversial, involved and drawn-out Domestic Phase of the “Transpacific Route Investigation” was activated during August 1970 by American Airlines, through a major extension to and via Hawaii to Australia.
Concurrent nonstop services were provided from Saint Louis, Missouri; Chicago, Illinois; and New York, New York.
No cachet was provided for the August 3, 1970 inaugural mail from Honolulu to New York.
This cover was carried on the American Airlines inaugural flight from Honolulu, Hawaii to New York (where it was backstamped) and is listed in the Contract Air Mail Flights (CAM) Section of The American Air Mail Catalogue as 33E132B.
Bob Haring, a former Editor-in-Chief of the American Air Mail Catalogue, prepared the cover.
