    Description

Lagos, Nigeria had been a stop on Pan American’s short-lived Foreign Air Mail Route 22 route to Africa which was
inaugurated out of Miami in December 1941. With the demise of this route and the shift of most African
    cities to
    Foreign Air Mail Route
18, there was no service to Nigeria until Kano was added in June 1956. This stop was
suspended shortly thereafter and finally Pan Am resumed Lagos service on October 2, 1961 as an
intermediate point between Accra, Ghana, and Leopoldville, Congo.
    This cover was
    carried on the
inaugural Foreign Air Mail Route 18 flight from New York to Lagos, Nigeria
(where it was backstamped) and is listed in the Foreign Air Mail (FAM) Section of The American Air Mail Catalogue as F18-330.
