Description
At the time of the approval of Pan American’s takeover of American Overseas Airlines, the Civil Aeronautics Boards reshuffled the transatlantic patterns to permit Pan American to operate to Paris and Rome (in competition with Trans World Airways) while TWA replaced AOA as a Pan Am competitor on the London and Frankfurt services.Despite the importance of Paris as a new Pan American city, no request was made for philatelic treatment when service was inaugurated on December 17, 1950, two weeks before the Rome extension.
This cover was carried on the December 20, 1950 Foreign Air Mail Route 18 inaugural flight from Paris, France to New York (where it was backstamped) and is listed in the Foreign Air Mail (FAM) Section of The American Air Mail Catalogue as F18-167.
Bill Schneider, Jr., a noted air mail historian, prepared the cover.
