    Description

    Piedmont Airlines’ new service to South Carolina's “Low Country” was inaugurated on April 26, 1970, using propjet equipment.
    Because of the short notice of this inaugural, no official cachets were provided and few collector covers were handled.
    For positive identification, Columbia covers should bear Charleston backstamp.
    This cover was carried on the inaugural Air Mail Route 87 flight from Columbia, South Carolina to Charleston, South Carolina (where it was backstamped) and is listed in the Contract Air Mail Flights (CAM) Section of The American Air Mail Catalogue as 87SE96.
