    Description

Piedmont Airlines began operations over a newly-authorized extension of its mid-South local service route to a new northern terminus, New York City, on November 15, 1966.
The initial southbound service operated from New York's LaGuardia Airport via Dulles Airport (Washington, DC), Charlottesville, and Lynchburg, terminating at Roanoke where most collector covers were backstamped.
This cover was carried on the inaugural Air Mail Route 87 flight from New York to Roanoke, Virginia (where it was backstamped) and is listed in the Contract Air Mail Flights (CAM) Section of The American Air Mail Catalogue as 87S88.
