Description

On May 14, 1929 eastbound from Detroit, and May 15 westbound from Cleveland, the first direct “over-the-lake” passenger service was inaugurated, using Keystone-Loening amphibian planes.
The Detroit flight was historic in that Amelia Earhart was its special pilot.
Since these covers are the only ones ever officially flown by Earhart over a Contract Air Mail route, they are of special interest to collectors. Unofficial cachets were provided by the Thompson Aeronautical Corporation
This cover
was carried on the inaugural Contract Air Mail Route 27 flight from Detroit, Michigan to Cleveland, Ohio and is listed in the Contract Air Mail Flights (CAM) Section of The American Air Mail Catalogue as 27E27.
During 1931 the airline changed its name to Transamerican Airlines Corporation. The airline was later purchased by American Airlines.
