Western Airlines' Air Mail Route 35 service was extended from Rapid City, South Dakota, via Minneapolis / Saint Paul, to Rochester, Minnesota on April 1, 1947.This cover was carried on the inaugural Air Mail Route 35 flight from the Minneapolis, Minnesota Airport Mail Facility to Pierre, South Dakota (where it was backstamped) and is listed in the Contract Air Mail Flights (CAM) Section of The American Air Mail Catalogue as 35W14f.
On September 9, 1986, the directors of Western and Delta Air Lines approved an 0 million purchase of Western by Delta. On October 3 the Justice Department’s antitrust division announced that it would not oppose the acquisition. On October 23 the Department of Transportation gave tentative approval to the merger. Final government approval was made on December 12, whereupon Delta completed its acquisition of Western, making Western a wholly owned subsidiary of the Atlanta-based carrier. The carriers continued operating as separate airlines until April 1, 1987, when Western’s operations were combined with Delta’s. Western, which had commenced operations in 1926, ceased to exist as of April 1.
